The Hicks yew makes an excellent foundation plant for shady areas, often growing wider at the top than the base. Hicks yew benefits from an annual pruning in order to achieve a dense plant or hedge. New growth will sprout even from mature wood, making it popular for creating sculptures and topiaries. The foliage consists of thin, dark green needles that are 1 inch long. The Hicks yew can reach heights of 20 ft when fully mature. For a hedge, plant at 2 ft centers.
